Usual Suspects

Gran Canaria was a tough holiday in terms of fishing, I think I said before that it didn't feel like a great lure destination and day time fishing was especially fruitless. I lost one big Barracuda one morning that bit me off right at my feet and swam away with my favourite Jackfin Stylo, that left me in a bad mood for a short time.
The trip was a great time to catch up with Ross and Scott though and we still had a few of the usual suspects, Ornate Wrasse, Greater Weever and Lizard fish of both varieties were ever eager to take our light game offerings!

Bogue
Canary Damsel
Diamond Lizard Fish
Greater Weever
Madeira Rockfish
Ornate Wrasse
Common Pandora
Two Banded Sea Bream
I have to admit I am going tired of catching tiny fish, I am increasingly looking to actually catch less yet bigger fish, I feel I have had a good run with mini's and whatnot and have enjoyed it, but now it's getting old.
My life is changing quite dramatically and so are my thoughts about my fishing, I am going to really think about what I want from it all in the future.

I expect my friends will pull me back in at regular intervals mind you and to be fair I can't think of better people to fish with than Scott and Ross!

New Species

Whilst away on Gran Canaria I managed another new species; a Black Tail Comber.
I actually misidentified it at first as it looks similar to a Common Comber but the striped markings are irregular in width meaning it is indeed a new one on me, lush!

Caught on the ever faithful Aquawave Ami in case you're curious.

Small Largemouth

Expectations about fishing holidays can be funny things, I have recently been to Gran Canaria and I expected it to be a better lure location than it was, the fishing was painfully tough!
Knowing we would be going fishing for Black Bass in a Dam or two, I had nice visions of me holding a my first ever fish of this species upwards of four pounds, instead I caught three tiny fish.

Still the location was lush, the sights driving to the dam were pretty nice and to be fair, given the colour of the water I think I was fairly lucky to catch anything on lure!

Thankfully Ross got this snaps, my photos didn't come out and all!

More Glaslyn Trout

I had another nice afternoon on the Glaslyn today, I lost a few, caught a few and had a ton of follows before turn-aways!
The river seems to have a good head of fish just now but boy are they picky, when they do hit they hit well but the follows vastly outweigh the takes. Its real fun learning about Sea Trout behaviour especially and with the time I have put in, I feel I am finally getting a foundation on how they behave in certain features and stretches of the river.

Here's a few pictures from today, the Jackson Kanade 50 doing the biz as usual!

Afon Acrobats

You know they say that Rainbows are the acrobats of the Trout world but lately on the Afon Glaslyn both the Brownies and Sewin have been displaying some proper acrobatics!

I was out again today and caught a few Brownies and a few Sea Trout, mainly caught on the Smith D-Contact 63 and the Jackson Kanade 50. I tell you though; I had a follow off of a massive fish on a slower section of water to the Aberglaslyn I was fishing before, this fish believe it or not followed one of the smallest lures I carry; the Duo Spearhead Ryuki 45S. She turned away last minute as she saw my ugly mug, I was gutted as it really was the fish of my dreams!

Heres a few photos of some fish caught on the Aberglaslyn stretch and some further down, I'll include some photo's of the pools for you watercraft nuts out there.

Flounder vs Jackson Kanade!

In keeping with random and unusual Flatfish captures; I recently caught a Flounder on a Jackson Kanade 50 whilst out for Sea Trout on the lower Glaslyn, he put a proper bend in a rod I'm testing as he kited about in the ebbing current.
As a Pure Fishing rep recently said to me at EAC "every day is a school day when fishing."

A Scottish Road Trip.

I attended the Edinburgh Angling Centre open day whilst representing Tronix Fishing at the weekend, it was quite cool and I had the opportunity to help some newcomers to lure angling which is always rewarding. I met loads of cool people too, both in the industry and just ordinary folk, it was a great time and was nice to catch up with a few friends too.

After the open day  Scott and I went on a proper road trip with a little fishing thrown in. The trip was actually supposed to be a hardcore fishing trip but, it really turned into more of a road trip because neither Scott or I had been so far north before, so it was just good to take a look around. We kind of just drove and fished an hour or two here and there, starting at Loch Etive and finishing in Ullapool we covered about 700 miles!

Here's some photo's I took along the way;

I fished like an absolute arse at Loch Etive and it took me ages to get into some fish while Gareth and Scott bagged up!

These Dab were particularly bizarre, this was the first of half a dozen or so caught at Scrabster on 30g Slow Jigs! the place was stiff with them and as soon as anything hit the deck they were on it! I would never think they could be caught like this.

My first ever Short Spined Sea Scorpion, no where near as large as Scotts one above but a new species for me nonetheless. I'm very happy to tick this one off!
